 Malpractice Quality Initiative (MQI)

CMIC has introduced a completely new malpractice plan to Massachusetts called the Malpractice Quality Initiative (MQI) — a special program for practices with excellent claim experience. MQI offers significantly reduced premiums and comprehensive risk management. Practices using a qualified EHR can save even more.

Features
• MQI offers the only commercially available modified claims made coverage in Massachusetts. It is underwritten by CMIC, a fully admitted insurance carrier rated A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best.
• Modified claims made coverage means MQI physicians will receive a fully paid tail if they leave the program.
• Substantial premium discounts will be in effect for those accepted into MQI. Premiums will be reduced up to 30% off typical occurrence rates, plus an additional 5% credit is available to physicians using an eligible EHR.
• Consent-to-Settle – ensures claims will not be settled without the insured’s consent.
• No enrollment fees, no membership fees or other hidden costs.
• Excellent claims defense using some of Massachusetts best malpractice defense attorneys.
• Comprehensive risk management for MQI practices.
• Premium financing is available with no additional finance charges.

Eligibility Criteria
1. MQI will initially be open to practices of 3 or more physicians. Strict underwriting standards will be in effect for participants at the time of application and continue as long as they are in the program.

2. Physicians must have no closed claims with indemnity payments greater than $100,000 in the past ten years and no open claims with reserves of $100,000 or greater. Practices of 10 or more where 80% of physicians meet this criteria will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

3. Board certification in the medical specialty in which they currently practice will be required of all physicians. Physicians just completing residency or a fellowship must obtain board certification within 2 years.

4. Physicians must have no disciplinary actions by any state licensing board or hospital within the last 10 years. They must have no adverse underwriting characteristics which could impact their ability to practice with skill and safety.

5. Practices with a CCHIT certified EHR in operation for 1 year or more are eligible for an additional 5% credit.

6. Physicians within a practice who no longer meet MQI eligibility criteria will no longer qualify for the MQI program. However CMIC will continue to insure them at normal market premiums and underwriting standards in effect at the time of departure.

7. A Quality Improvement and Incident Reporting program system must be implemented by MQI participants. This system must include direct communication with CMIC’s claims and risk management staff to track medical incidents within the practice and implement corrective action plans as appropriate.

8. Each physician will be required to satisfactorily complete an annual MQI Practice Management and Loss Prevention seminar/program.

To see if your practice qualifies for the MQI Program please call PIAM at 800.522.7426.
